How did the 17-year-old come up with the idea? "I wanted to give back to society in some way with this event. I was scrolling though news about various artists and celebrities doing things for the community, sometimes as a team. I thought, 'let me try something for the chess community, and as independently as possible.' When I got the idea, I was only thinking 'a musical concert, but for chess!' Another thing about it is it's aimed at smaller and younger players. I got to play against my first GM when I was 10, and I know that not many people get such a chance. My father, mother and coach are supporting me with advice on how to go about the event hosting. ICC 'Internet Chess Club' is handling the technical side of things, so I don't have to worry much on that aspect, and can focus more on the chess part. Anyone who is participating is also supporting the cause, in my opinion!"
"I played four online tournaments during this lockdown, in one of which I finished second, and - in contrast - one where I wasn't paired in two rounds and faced technical issues. I find that online tournaments are great for bullet and blitz games, as well as to try out some new things before attempting it over the board. Personally, I felt that classical formats are better suited as over-the-board experiences, and hence the reason for the 3 + 2 format. However, I understand how some may feel that online events have too many limitations and are not comparable to the physical feeling. While it is true that it is not possible for chess to be sustained only as an online game, I feel that it could live up to something greater than just a gimmick. Anyways, it's not like these events are the only option; over-the-board games will still be around once the pandemic subsides!"
"This is the first time I'm organizing an event like this," says the youngster from Erode. "It is pretty interesting so far. There's so many things to keep doing, talking to people, organizing the event itself, make arrangements, reply to a lot of doubts and queries etc. A few strong players were interested in participating as well, such as IM Arjun Kalyan, IM Krishna Teja, to name a few. I am excited to see how it will turn out; who knows, if it's good, and I get a good response, I might do another one!
"Is there anything that you want to say to the participants?"
"I would like to thank them for their contributions to the cause. Again, I had wanted to help using my knowledge and towards the chess community, which is how I got the idea. Would love for similar events to take place that contribute to current issues."
There are ten special prizes in the event as well.
