A Bishop and Knight endgame day
The first day of MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship witnessed several games which were decided in minor piece endgames involving mostly bishop and knight.
Round 1: Adhiban - Chandar: 1-0
Reigning Kerala State Senior champion Chandar Raju (2042) stretched top seed B Adhiban (PSPB, 2648) to his limit.
Black can still try to save the game 62...Ba3 63.Nf5 Bf8. However, the game continued 62...Nf6 63.Nf5 h5 only accelerated things in White's favor. 63...Ne8 64.Nxh6 Nd6 could have prolonged the inevitable. Black eventually sacrificed both of his bishop and knight for White's connected passed pawns. Adhiban had to use his bishop and knight to deliver checkmate after 4.5 hour-long grueling battle.
Sankalp - Parthasarathy: 0.5-0.5
GM Sankalp Gupta (MAH) had a narrow escape against R Parthasarathy (KAR).
26.b4 was not a good idea because the d6-pawn is about to fall and White needed to do something about it. 26.Bg5 Kf7 27.a4 Ke6 28.Bd8 was a better alternative. Anyway, even after capturing the d6-pawn, Black was unable to find a way to win the game in the resultant knight endgame.
Parthasarathy R (KAR), Chaitanya Sairam Mogili (AP), Kaivalya Sandip Nagare (MAH), Vivek Sharma (BIH), Adireddy Arjun (TEL), Bishal Basak (WB), Khalid Amin (JK), MD. Bashiq Imrose (TEL), Sunil Chhotani (PSPB), held GM Sankalp Gupta (MAH), IM C R G Krishna (RSPB), IM Vignesh N R (RSPB), IM Nubairshah Shaikh (MAH), IM Himal Gusain (RSPB), GM Sriram Jha (LIC), IM P Saravanan Krishnan (TN), IM D K Sharma (LIC) and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F (TN) to a draw each respectively.

Round 2: Abhimanyu - Jeet: 0.5-0.5
FM Jeet Jain (GUJ) held GM Abhimanyu Puranik (MAH) to a solid draw.
Deep - Kartavya: 0.5-0.5
Gujarat State champion Kartavya Anadkat who had won three consecutive tournaments in three different formats at the end of last year, managed to hold his own against GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB).
Ravi - Visakh: 0.5-0.5
IM Ravi T S (TN) made a nice save in the knight vs bishop endgame against GM Visakh N R (RSPB).
50...Bb5 allowed White to create a virtual fortress via Nf3-Nd2. However, he did not opt for it. Instead, 51.Kb2 Kd5 52.Ka3 Be8 53.Kb4 allowed Black to get back in the game. 53...g5 once again abandoned all hopes for a win for Black.
Suyog - Iniyan: 1-0
GM Iniyan P (TN) made an incorrect pawn push at the center of the board 18...d4. It turned things in his opponent FM Suyog Wagh's (MAH) favor.
18...dxe4 19.Nxe4 Bd5 would have been a better continuation for Black. 18...d4 19.Na4 Bb5 20.Nb2 Bc6 21.e5 Ne4 22.Nc4 and things quickly turned into White's favor completely.
FM Jeet Jain (GUJ), Kartavya Anadkat (GUJ), IM Ravi T S (TN), FM Aradhya Garg (DEL), Rajesh Nayak (ODI), Shreyansh Daklia (CHT), Ram Prakash (PUN), CM Garv Gaur (DEL), Vedant Pimpalkhare (MAH), Kaivalya Sandip Nagare (MAH), Khalid Amin (JK), Adireddy Arjun (TEL) drew with GM Abhimanyu Puranik (MAH), GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB), GM Visakh N R (RSPB), GM Deepan Chhakravarthy (RSPB), GM Arjun Kalyan (TN), IM Neelash Saha (WB), IM Nitin S (RSPB), IM Harshavardhan G B (TN),IM Sidhant Mohapatra (RSPB), IM Nubairshah Shaikh (MAH), GM Sriram Jha (LIC) and IM D K Sharma (LIC) each respectively.
