Jval Patel wins Open, Prishita Gupta triumphs in Girls
Jval Saurin Patel (1702, GUJ) scored an impressive 10/11 to win the National U-11 Championship, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole event! He also gained a massive 104 rating points in the process.
In the Girls Category, Prishita Gupta (1556) clinched 1st position in the Girls section with 9/11. She scored 3 consecutive wins from Round 6-8!
Open Round 7: Jval Saurin Patel - Ethan Vaz: 1-0
In an 84-move marathon game which maintained a fairly equal position throughout the game, it was Ethan Vaz (2059, GOA), who made the final and decisive error in a Knight endgame against Jval Saurin Patel (1702, GUJ).
Even though this 3 vs 2 Knight endgame should be a draw, White can keep applying continuous pressure. Ethan finally cracked on move 72 - ...h5 is a blunder because of the unexpected tactical shot 73. f5+!
...Kxf5 is impossible because the Black Knight is en prise, and ...gxf5 fails to Nf4+, forcing the trade of Knights and going into a winning pawn endgame! This was the main point of 73. f5+ - vacating the f4-square for the Knight. In the game, Ethan went for 73...Kd6, and Jval played the very powerful 74. Nf4! The Gujrati youngster went on to win the game in a few more moves.
Open Round 8: Sarthak Sharma - Adharsh K: 0-1
Adharsh K (1612, TN) won a very nice game with the Black pieces against Sarthak Sharma (1413, KAR). This game features a very nice decision taken by Adharsh - not fearing an impending attack and correctly judging that the opponent's attack is failing.
19...Qxb2 was an excellent decision taken by Adharsh - it was important to understand that 20. Qh6+ is actually bad for White, and the attack is fizzling out after 21. Qh4+ g5 22. Qh6+ Ke7 23. Qxg5+ f6!
After 24...Rf7, there are no more checks and White has both Rooks hanging. White continued 25. Rxf7 Kxf7 26. Qh5+ Kg7 27. Rd1, but now it is Black's turn to attack - 27...Rh8!
The Black Rook is coming to h1 with decisive effect next, and Black will have a winning attack against the White King. Adharsh went on to win the game in a few more moves.
Open Round 10: Ethan Vaz - Vivaan Vijay Saraogi: 1-0
Ethan Vaz (2059, GOA) took advantage of his opponent's Vivaan Vijay Saraogi's (1546, MAH) inaccuracy in the opening, and went ahead to score a smooth victory with the White pieces.
...Qc7 started the problems for Vivaan - Ethan now found a string of accurate moves starting with 16. cxd5 Bxd5 17. Bf3! trading off the strong light-squared bishop and making c6 a permanent weakness. The game continued ...Qxe5 18. Nxc6 Bxc6 19. Bxc6 Rd8 20. Qa4 and White already has a big advantage due to his active pieces, Black's weak pawn structure and uncastled King. Ethan went on to convert the game comfortably.
Round 8 Girls: Nivedita VC - Gorli Nyna: 0-1
In a back-and-forth endgame in which both the players had the advantage at multiple points, it was Nivedita VC (1289, TN) who made the last mistake against Gorli Nyna (1421, AP).
Ne4 was the final mistake - White had to play 31. Nxc7 Rc8 32. Rc8 Ne6 and the point is, the c4-pawn is defended by the White Rook. After Ne4, Black continued 31...Nc2+ 32. Kb2 Nxe3 and now Nxc7 doesn't work because of ...Rc8 followed by ...Rxc4, as the White Rook doesn't defend the pawn anymore. Gorli converted this advantage comfortably to a win with the Black pieces.
Round 9 Girls: Raajev Rudra - Prishita Gupta: 0-1
Prishita Gupta (1556, DEL) had a lost position against Raajev Rudra (1359, KAR), but managed to pull off a nice swindle and win the game!
32. Bg2 was the last mistake on Rudra's part. The best way to continue would've been Kg2! d4 Qc8+ followed by Bg4, and White is doing fine. But Bg2 runs into 32...Ra1 33. Qe3 Qe6! and White cannot avoid the loss of the e8-bishop. Prishita checkmated the White king in a few more moves.
Round 11 Girls: Kirthika B - Gorli Nyna: 1-0
Kirthika B (1330, TEL) made quick work of her opponent Gorli Nyna (1421, AP) with the White pieces, after her opponent made a tactical oversight early in the game.
...g6 is a blunder, as now White wins the game with the tactical shot 15. Nxd5! exd5 16. e6! taking advantage of hanging Rook on h8 and the uncastled Black king. Black decided to end her troubles and took back on e6, avoiding the vicious attack by giving up an exchange. The game went on for many more moves, but Kirthika never lost her advantage and went on to give the game comfortably.
