University of Calcutta reclaims East Zone Inter University Chess Championship 2022 after five years
University of Calcutta Men's team have been making a second place finish for the past three editions from 2018 to 2021. That changed on 10th December. The team finally ended their chase and claimed the first place. Both University of Calcutta and the defending champions, Adamas University scored an unbeaten 11/12. The match between them also ended in a 2-2 draw with four decisive games in the penultimate round. However, the former won became champion due to having more game points than the latter. Subhabrata Roy and IM Utsab Chatterjee won the individual board prizes from the winning team. Three teams scored 9/11. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya was adjudged third according to tie-breaks.
Top two seeds interchange their ranks
University of Calcutta edged past the previous year winner Adamas University on tie-breaks to clinch the first place. Both teams had an International Master each and they both delivered a 100% performance.
IM Utsab Chatterjee and Anustoop Biswas delivered a 100% performance, scoring 6/6 and 4/4 each respectively. They were followed by Subhabrata Roy 5/6 and Shuvam Roy 3.5/4 making important contribution.
The tournament was organized by APS University Rewa from 7th to 10th December 2022 in Satna, Madhya Pradesh. A total of 30 teams from the East Zone took part in the six-round Swiss league team tournament which had a time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
