Chess for Youth: Diptayan triumphs yet again!

Nearly 852 players flocked into the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Kolkata to play in the 12th edition of Chess for Youth 2017 which was held from 6th to 10th May. Defending Champion GM Diptayan Ghosh won the tournament again, without breaking a sweat. Shahid Ahmed S.K sends us a pictorial report. 

GM Diptayan Ghosh wins 12th Chess for Youth 2017

Defending Champion GM Diptayan Ghosh of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata won the 12th Chess for Youth 2017 held in Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Kolkata from 6th to 10th May 2017. He had scored 6.0/7 points and won the Championship in the Premier group for the 2nd year in a row. He drew against former Commonwealth Under-13 Champion Koustav Chatterjee in the last round to secure his first place.

GM Diptayan Ghosh receives his Championship trophy and ₹30000 cash from GM Dibyendu Barua, Shooter Joydeep Karmakar, Archer Dola Banerjee and Tennis player Akhtar Ali.

There was a clear leader since 5th round and Diptayan maintained his lead throughout the tournament by 0.5 points and became the champion.

In the interview, Diptayan mentioned that he is playing this tournament since childhood. In previous editions, he had faced many top grandmasters from across the country. He also talked about facing Magnus Carlsen for the very first time a few months ago in Pro Chess League.

 All age group Champions. There were six age categories Under 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16. There were ten prizes for boys & five for girls.

Former Commonwealth Under-13 champion Koustav Chatterjee collects his 3rd prize of ₹15000.

FM Mitrabha Guha did not have a good tournament and finished 10th in Premiere category to bag ₹4000.

The tournament was inaugurated by the youngest participant of the tournament Srijita Das who is just 3.5 years old in presence of reigning National Rapid Champion GM Neelotpal Das, GM Diptayan Ghosh, Fashion designer Agnimitra Paul, BCA Vice President Srenik Sett, GM Dibyendu Barua, MD of Kutchina Appliances Mr Nimit Bajoria, Regional Director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations Mr Gautam De.

Parents were not allowed inside Indian Council for Cultural Relations during the tournament.

A blooper video. From a dull draw to a dramatic finish due to an illegal move played by Shrutarshi Ray and Sonkalan Bharati gets a lucky win in the 3rd round in Premiere group.

There were 20 main prizes, 90 age group prizes and 3 special prizes for a 100% score. The total number of participants were 852. We had to refuse a lot of entries who failed to meet the deadline.

 


We also had twins from Chattisgarh, Aujsya Mohta and Shaurya Mohta who had to play in the Premier group as per the tournament rules.
