14 teams ready to clash as Kerala Premier Chess League 2025 starts tomorrow

The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL) 2025 starts tomorrow in Thiruvananthapuram! A total of 14 teams are ready to battle it out in India's highest prize money chess league. With a prize fund of Rs. 25 lakh, the winning team will take home Rs. 10 lakh. Each team will consist of 20 players with 5 reserve players. The games will be played in a 15+5 time control with Swiss rounds on Day 1 and knockouts on Day 2. The lineup includes 3 Grandmasters and 6 International Masters. 14 teams set to clash in KPCL 2025

The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL) 2025, organized by the Premier Chess Academy, is set to take place on 6th and 7th September 2025 in Thiruvananthapuram. This will be India's biggest prize money chess league with a prize fund of Rs. 25 lakh. It will feature 14 teams battling it out over the board. KPCL is introduced as the first-ever chess league to use a fixed 20-board setup. It will bring together young players, veterans, and international players under one roof.

League details

Dates: 6th and 7th Septermber

Teams: 14 in total, with each team consisting of 20 active players and a maximum of five reserved players.

Time control: 15 minutes + 5 seconds per move

Structure: A 6-round Swiss on Day 1, with semifinals, finals, and a third-place clash on Day 2.

Tiebreaks: Blitz and Armageddon if needed.

Venue: Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, Opposite Kanakakkunnu Palace,

Nandavanam, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala 695033

Prize details

The total prize fund will be divided as follows:

1st Prize: Rs. 10,00,000
2nd Prize: Rs. 7,00,000
3rd Prize: Rs. 4,00,000
4th Prize: Rs. 3,00,000

The prize money will be shared equally among all the team members and the manager. There will also be a "Best board" prize, worth Rs. 5,000 for every board. This means that even if a team doesn’t finish at the top, outstanding individual performances will still be rewarded.
