K S Naveen Shines with Perfect Score as 64 Squares Marks 10th Fortnightly Tournament!
The 64 Squares Chess Academy, a renowned hub for chess talent in Chennai under the guidance of Candidate Master S. C. Subramanian, has long been credited with nurturing the careers of Grandmasters like Adhiban Baskaran and M. Shyam Sundar. Staying true to its mission of fostering talent at the grassroots, the Academy recently hosted the 10th edition of its fortnightly Open & Children’s Chess Tournament, a series that has swiftly established itself as a highlight of the city’s chess calendar. What set this milestone event apart from the rest? Read on to discover the highlights.
The 64 Squares Chess Academy celebrated yet another milestone with the successful staging of its 10th Open & Children’s Chess Tournament at Citi Centre Mall, Chennai, on Sunday, 24th August 2025. The fortnightly series, now running strong into its tenth edition, drew a lively turnout of 224 participants, among them 71 international-rated players, competing across the Open and various age-group categories. Rising above the field in the Open was K S Naveen, who produced a flawless 6/6 performance to claim the title. The prize distribution matched the scale of the event, with Rs. 35,000 in cash awards handed out in the Open section, in addition to 15 trophies for the Boys’ categories and 10 prizes for the Girls’ sections, presented by well-known chess journalist Arvind Aaron. The tournament was directed by CM S C Subramanian, with the smooth conduct of play ensured by Chief Arbiter M Vijayakumar and supported by FIDE Trainer V Ravichandran.
A shining highlight of the tournament was the participation of Sharon Rachel Aby, whose presence brought both inspiration and distinction to the event. Sharon’s journey is one of extraordinary grit and talent. Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at a young age, she has confronted challenges that might have stopped many, yet her resolve has propelled her onto the international stage. At just 14, she carved her place in history by finishing 7th in the individual chess event at the Paralympics Asian Games in Hangzhou, China — a remarkable achievement that many can only dream of.
Sharing his joy on Sharon’s participation, CM S. C. Subramanian says:
“It was indeed a privilege for 64 Squares to have Sharon Rachel Aby play in the Open Chess Tournament, where she bravely took on strong rated players and scored a commendable 4 points out of 6 rounds. She displayed her grit and determination by defeating the highly rated Mr. D. V. Surjeet (FIDE 1850) and secured 10th place in the standings. A girl of remarkable perseverance and true love for the game, Sharon plays with passion and even follows the same openings I favour—the Caro-Kann and the Queen’s Pawn. May God bless this talented child with many more victories, joy, and success in her chess journey.”
Mr. Subramanian also expressed his pride in having renowned chess journalist Arvind Aaron serve as the Chief Guest of the event, adding distinction and encouragement to the occasion:
Son of the legendary Mr. Manuel Aaron—India’s first International Master, nine-time National Champion, and recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award—Mr. Arvind Aaron carries forward a rich chess legacy. Renowned for his deep knowledge of the game and his significant contributions to Indian sports journalism, he is also one of the most well-travelled personalities in the chess world. I have had the privilege of knowing him personally for over four decades, and what stands out most is his humility. Despite his vast experience and stature, he remains soft-spoken, kind, and a true gentleman—just as he was years ago. His presence made the occasion all the more memorable for the young talents and chess enthusiasts gathered today.
