MPL 35th National U-9 Round 4: 7 players with perfect score in Open

So far, my opponents have been gifting me free pieces

These were the words of Aaryan Amol Waghmere (1350, Maharashtra) after his relatively quick win against Kiyan Kevalkumar Patel (1244, Gujrat). This was the first game to finish among the top 5 Boards of the Open section, so for a brief moment, Aaryan was the sole leader of the event with 4/4. Today he will face Aarav Sarbalia (1458, Karnataka) in the 5th Round - only one of them will stay in the top.

MPL National U9 Round 4 Open:  Kiyan Kevalkumar Patel - Aaryan Amol Waghmere: 0-1

After misplaying the opening and giving Black huge center space, Kiyan just missed a simple Knight fork, with a double attack on the Queen and the Rook. Aaryan converted the game without any difficulties to a quick victory.

Aarav Sarbalia - Pazhany Kaushal Kohli: 1-0

Over the last few rounds, if there's one player who has consistently been playing the longest games (and winning them!), his name is Aarav Sarbalia (1458, Karnataka). But Round 4 was an exception - he took down Pazhany Kaushal Kohli (1295, Jammu and Kashmir) relatively quickly.

Round 4 Girls: Sharvaanica A S - Diya Digamber Sawal: 1-0

In a topsy-turvy game where both players missed multiple winning chances, Sharvaanica AS (1050, TN) had the last smile as she found a cute combination to finish off Diya Digamber Sawal (1115, Goa). The 7-year-old small town girl continues her winning streak, beating higher rated opponents each time!

Round 4 Girls: Arpita Amey Patnakar - Aaradhya Das: 1-0

This game was very one-sided - until it wasn't. Aaradhya had a much better position with the Black pieces in a Rook endgame, as she was a pawn up. But she couldn't find the accurate moves to keep her advantage. The extra pawn was lost, Rooks were traded, and now it was a 3 vs 3 King and pawn endgame. The actual twist came here:

Arpita went from losing to drawing to checkmating the Black King. What a game! Look at the most important variations in the replayable PGN below:

The MPL 35th National U9 Championship 2022 is taking place in Indore Public School. The total prize fund of this mega event is Rs. 5 lakhs. The event is being organized by the Madhya Pradesh State Chess Ad Hoc Committee. This is an 11-round classical event which will run from 25th December 2022 - 2nd January 2023. The time control of the event is 90 minutes +30 seconds increment. Rounds 5 and 6 will be held on 28th December from 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM respectively.
