Lots of decisive chess
The first day of MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022 witnessed a lot of decisive games. In the first round, only one draw took place among top 25 boards and the second round had only decisive games among top 15 boards.
Round 1: Bhakti - Mrittika: 0-1
The newly crowned West Bengal State Sub-Junior Girls champion, Mrittika Mallick (1666) played very precisely against the former Asian champion, IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa).
23.g5 did not faze Black. She handled it perfectly 23...hxg5 24.Nxg5 Nf5 25.Qf3 Bxg5 26.Bxg5 f6 27.Bd2 Qd7 28.b3 b5. Now that everything is safeguarded on the kingside, Black created her own play on the queenside 28...b5.
After a lot of back and forth play, White's best opportunity occurred in the above position when 64.Rgxf5 exf5 65.Rd6 was completely winning for her. Instead, 64.Rxh5 was played and after a few inaccuracies, Black gained decisive advantage and went on to win the game.
Divya - Varshita: 0.5-0.5
WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) got herself a very good opportunity against reigning Madhya Pradesh State Junior Girls and State Senior Women champion Varshita Jain.
30.e5 followed by e6 would have been devastating for Black. The game continued 30.Bf1 g6 31.Rec2 Rxa2 32.Rxa2 and slowly White's advantage evaporated. The game liquidated into a drawn opposite color bishop endgame.
Round 2: Kheerthi - Vaishali: 0-1
Top seed of the tournament, IM Vaishali R (TN) could have finished the game a lot earlier against Telangana State Sub-Junior Girls and State Senior Women champion Kheerthi Ganta (TEL).
Find out the best continuation for Black after 25.Bd2.
Nirupama - Rakshitta: 1-0
WFM Kotepalli Sai Nirupama (AP) could have gained substantial advantage early in the middlegame against WIM Rakshitta Ravi (TN).
