Soham Bhattacharyya dominates 1st SXCCAA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2024

by Shahid Ahmed - 18/09/2024

Soham Bhattacharyya scored an unbeaten 10.5/11 to win 1st SXCCAA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2024. He won the tournament with a round to spare. Soham finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Five players - Sneha Halder, Maitreyi Mondal, Debapriya Manna, Jion Ghosh and Swapnabha Neogi scored 9/11 each. They were placed second to sixth each respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹16000 and ₹12000 along with a trophy each respectively. World no.4 and India no.1 - GM Arjun Erigaisi was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony. He also played Simultaneous exhibition games. This is Soham's third rating tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Soham wins against Arjun in Simul, Sneha first to draw

The top three finishers of each individual prize category were eligible to play a Simultaneous exhibition game against the World no.4 and India no.1 - GM Arjun Erigaisi. It was a clock simul event. The time given was 15 minutes each. So it became physically impossible for Arjun to not lose on time. However, regardless of the result, the most important takeaway from the simul was getting an opportunity to play such a world-class player. The eventual runner-up, Sneha Halder was the first player to draw against Arjun. The winner of the tournament, Soham Bhattacharyya was the only player to score a clean win on the board. 3.5-years-old Anish Sarkar got a rare opportunity to play against Arjun after one of prize winners became absent from the simul.

Editor's note: I returned to St. Xavier's College, Kolkata after 11 years and a day since I won my last tournament - inaugural Red Bull Battle for the Queen in 2013 at the exactly same venue and hall. I scored 7.5/9 and won that tournament after making a 7/7 start. That was certainly my best performance in a Blitz tournament and it certainly holds a special place in my memory.

A total of 325 players took part from all over West Bengal in this three-day eleven round All Bengal Rapid Rating Open tournament.
